When I was in college years ago I worked for a major grocery store chain. We had food stamp customers who would come in and buy the best of everything: Porterhouse and New York steaks, shrimp, imported smoked oysters, fresh mushrooms, asparagus and other things I couldn’t afford and I worked. This was when food stamps consisted of coupon books and using them was embarassing. The irony they couldn’t purchase things essentials like toothpaste, soap and toilet paper, necessities for a civil life but they could buy imported foods that for the most part were luxuries and not necessities. Many times they tried to sneak forbidden things through but the checkers knew what was allowed and not. Many times they had a 5th of jack daniels or johnny walker scotch and carton of cigarette and pulled out a 20 dollar bill. They walked out to a late model cadillac, lincoln continental or chrysler imperial. This pissed me off to no end. Here I was working and I couldn’t afford any of this on a regular basis and if I could it would be an occasional treat. As far as I’m concerned, able bodied people need to work for their welfare and if they don’t cut ’em off. Surprisingly people becoome very creative when faced with things like this and they find a job quickly.
