I live in Wyoming on a large ranch that has been in my tamily for four generations. The main house, buck house, shops and barns all have large masonry heaters. We burn about 4 cords of wood through the winter months. We have never paid a heating bill and don’t plan to anytime soon. One fire a day keeps the buildings warm for 24 hours. The heater in the main house has been there since it was built by my great grandfather, the others were built afterward, the newest being about 60 years old. They also heat water for washing and dishes for free. Our water comes from deep wells powered by wind mills that pump to large storage tanks. My ranch has the lowest heating and water cost of any in the state. And that’s the way we like it.
