We’ve had lots of politicians who have ‘overstated” their military service – LBJ spent a week or two in uniform during WWII, gladhanding before running back to his political nest. George W. Bush was in the Air Nat’l Guard, but loved to wear that flight jacket. Biden, tho’ he never served, continuously talked about his eldest son, Bo’s death as tho’ he died in combat. He was a JAG lawyer for a few months in Iraq and died of cancer (non-service related) years after his discharge. Vance, to his credit, has never claimed more for his service than he earned. And here’s what doesn’t get said – The Marines have a creed and it is that EVERY Marine is a MARINE RIFLEMAN. Fly a Marine jet? You didn’t get into that cockpit until you were a trained, gun shootin’, foot poundin’ grunt. Manned a supply depot for the Corps? Better believe you are as trained and ready to go out on the wire as the guys you’re dispensing stuff to. Ask an Army clerk to field strip an M-4, you might get a blank look. Ask a Marine clerk to do it and it’s in pieces in under 3 minutes.
