After 8 years in the Army, I applied to my home state police academy. Was accepted. Graduated 3rd in my class. After graduation I was pulled aside by the lieutenant. He said don’t put your assignment application in now, wait 6-12 months. I was like what?! What do you mean wait?? I just graduated! He said this is a minority hire round, we need 5 and only have 5 slots open. If you put your application in now for road duty, it’ll be another year before you can reapply. What?!!! He said in the meantime, you can work at the county jail for a year waiting for the next open hire slots. I was furious. 3rd in my class, aced everything. Yet here were guys being placed ahead of me who could barely speak English, one woman failed the firearm course 3 times. Three! But she was getting a road slot. I said F this. Moved. Started a small construction business never looked back. White privileged my white ass
