When the 14th amendment was enacted there was a lot of LEGAL IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM SEEKING TAKING PLACE IN AMERICA! The children born to LEGAL ENTERING immigrants, whose parents indicated their wish to stay here and become NATURALIZED CITIZENS, those were granted citizenship. The immigrants had support systems in place, brought skills our country needed to grow, did not receive any government assistance but were supported by family and their ethnic community. Illegally entering the country, taking resources away from legal citizens and having “anchor” babies was not the intent of the 14th amendment. Those who enter the USA illegally and then twist the 14th amendment to stay is preventing the true purpose of it! There are illegals who live their whole lives here and NEVER intended or attempted to to become naturalized citizens. THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF IMMIGRATION TO A NEW COUNTRY, becoming part of it. My grandparents proudly displayed their naturalization certificates, framed, side by side, in the neighborhood grocery store they opened and ran. They embraced the freedom of this country, learning English, freedom of speech and not fearing a late night knock on the door.
