As a geriatric nurse I can say that Joe is dementia. Every part of him says dementia. The stiff body, stilted and shuffling gait, hands clinched or held close to the body all part of dementia. The flat affect, easily distracted, the blank stare all part of dementia. The slurred random speech and word salad, all part of dementia. Joe wearing sunglasses more and more is an attempt to minimize visual distractions. Joe isn’t doing any of this on purpose, it’s dementia. Visit a nursing home, you’ll see for yourself. Talk to the aids and nurses. I’ve taken care of 70 yo dementia patients and 90+yo dementia patients. It’s not ever the same but has the same characteristics. Some are nice, some are nasty, some don’t care about being touched, others will punch you, some make NO sense but know what they mean(gotta know your body language) and others will curse you out and then act like you’re their best friend. I’ve learned a lot working with dementia and Joe has it. It’s sad and the most affected person is Jill. She’ll die before he does unless she gets help. Of course she’ll do the John Kerry once Joe is out but it’s very taxing taking care of these people. Oh, an Joe seems to be one that might sleep, there are those that sleep for 10 minutes and they’re up for the next 3 days. Really, visit any nursing home, nice one, dumpy one, expensive one dementia is there and you’ll recognize Joe.
