Some of you folks are incredibly stupid and out of touch. Mamdani has appointed a stellar experienced Staff of experienced American professionals including his vice Mayor. The Billionaires and Millionaires are NOT leaving. They are totally invested in the future of NYC, and have pledged to work with Mamdani to create a better city for all New Yorkers. One thing that Mamdani HAS to do: he needs to give up on the idea of free buses. You need some fare on transit, if only to keep homeless folks from camping out on transit, as well as making sure teens don’t also ride for free with potential bad intent.
We have free busses in Tucson Arizona. While that has helped many carless folks without drivers licenses to get jobs (which has been good for that sector) you are absolutely correct that the transit system is now overrun by homeless, crack heads, fentanyl users, criminals, and listless teens. Its been this way for 5 years now. And drug deals are made at bus stops.
If there was just even a nominal fee to ride the bus, it would eliminate a lot of this. Or they could sell TAP cards for $10 a month (plastic bus pass cards). Anything to bring some kind of control to the situation.
And people who use the bus to commute to jobs can get a 50% discount, maybe, if that helps them.
