Why are Red states the welfare states that take more government services than their taxes pay for? Blue states don’t.

Using raw numbers from 2024, Nebraska (red) and Minnesota (blue) are tied for contributing most of their economies to the federal government, contributing 10% more than they take in. New Mexico (blue) is the state that takes the highest amount (22%) more than they contribute. That said, the raw numbers do not even come close to telling the whole story. Fortunately, someone has done a deep dive into this. The data is from 2017, the most recent year I could find. It appears no one else has done such a deep dive since then.
