9/11 I was a SSG at Ft Lewis. Very challenging day I’ll never forget. Had to arm my soldiers and get out to find and secure the perimeter because we had open gates and no fences back then. Half the soldiers and workers were trapped off base because we blocked gates with Stryker and Bradley. Very long, emotional day. Families were scared for us, we were worried for them and it took hours to get any form of communication, supplies and coordination. I served 25 years with 9 deployments and I still remember every moment of 9/11.
